The beloved disciple John outlived all the other disciples. They couldn’t kill him, so they put him on a ship headed to the Isle of Patmos. He was very old at this point in his life, probably on a ship filled with prisoners. I can imagine John’s beard and hair were probably gray, his body very tired, and maybe somewhat weak in spirit too. He gets on this island and finds himself in the spirit on the Lord’s Day! John was still being a vessel that God was flowing through. No doubt John often wondered why, just as we often do as well. But he never gave up! He found himself writing the Book of Revelation. He set his loneliness aside, his hurts and disappointments, all just to be a servant of God one more time. In Revelation 22:20, John tells us the Words of Jesus, “Surely I come quickly, Amen! Even so, come quickly Lord Jesus. If some two thousand years ago, John the beloved told us Jesus will come quickly, how much closer are we now? How will Jesus find you? Like the beloved disciple, in the spirit on the Lord’s Day? Setting our circumstances aside, and still doing the will of the Father? Or are we letting our circumstances bring us to despair! You may feel your too young, or too old, or maybe you just feel all used up from the scars of sin. Just as John was alone on the isle of Patmos, find yourself a place to get in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day. See what great things He can do and will do through you!
